List Detail

Ronnicia Johnson-Walker, DSHA '02

Why are you glad to be plaid?
I am glad to be plaid because I am part of a sisterhood that extends far and wide! Even today as an alumna, I can recognize that plaid skirt anywhere and often share my experiences with the young ladies I encounter. “Being plaid” is something that connects me to 1000s of other women of diverse background, cultures, ethnicities and races. Although our experiences may have not been exactly the same as Dashers we all have that common respect of being able to say we are successful women because of DSHA. As a 15-year-old freshmen, I did not understand the importance of my experience but reflecting 16 years later, I would not have changed my parent’s choice of choosing DSHA! As a mother (although a “boy's” mom) I cannot wait to have a daughter, so that she too will be “Glad to be Plaid!”
For what are you grateful about your DSHA experience?
I am grateful for my single-sex, Catholic, education at DSHA. I was academically challenged to strive for greatness. All of my teachers pushed me to not just be average, but to be the best even when I felt I was giving my all. I was always challenged to go that extra mile academically. More importantly, as a Dasher, I was not only challenged academically, but I grew as a woman. DSHA molded me into a confident woman who is not afraid to face challenges and have my voice heard in times of adversity. Everyone from Mr/Mrs. Bartel, to Father Jerry to Sister Linda, to Senora Morse-Caruso (the list could go on and on) wanted nothing more than to see me succeed.
