Dear Parents, Alumnae, and friends of DSHA,

Today, at the end of our Ash Wednesday Liturgy we announced that after 37 years of committed service to the mission of Divine Savior Holy Angels High School, Mr. Tim Grandy has decided to retire at the conclusion of this academic year.

Mr. Grandy has taught over 3,000 Dashers across two generations. He will be remembered as a passionate educator who has successfully helped girls grow as writers, critical thinkers, and communicators. He is known for his tireless willingness to coach budding writers, and for the thousands of hours he has spent providing writing feedback.

Outside the classroom Mr. Grandy is responsible for having worked with students to produce the yearbook since 1987.
We will celebrate Mr. Grandy with a coffee and donut celebration in the Quad on Wednesday, May 16 from 8:00 – 10:00 a.m. Students, parents and alumnae are welcome to stop down to wish Mr. Grandy well. We will also recognize Mr. Grandy at the End of Year Liturgy on Friday, May 18.

Please join me in congratulating Mr. Grandy. And please see below for some special acknowledgements and memories from two of his current colleagues – who are also former students of Mr. Grandy’s.

We are grateful to him for his dedicated service and wish him Godspeed in his retirement.

Principal Dan Quesnell

Tim is one of the teachers I had at DSHA who inspired me to pursue teaching as my career choice. His enthusiasm and obvious love for teaching and for his students stayed with me well after I graduated from DSHA. When I thought about becoming a teacher, I thought about Tim Grandy. I wanted a career that would bring me the kind of fulfillment and joy that I saw in him every day. When I got my first real teaching job and was asked to teach AP English, I immediately  called Tim and asked him if I could have his materials and if I could sit in on his classes. Tim made copies of everything he had to help me and invited me back to watch him teach several times. I loved coming back to room 108 to be a twenty something high school student. It made me want to take his class all over again! When I was hired in 2012 to teach alongside Tim, I knew I had earned my bragging rights. It has been a privilege to have him as a teacher and a blessing to have him as a colleague and friend. Tim is humble and kind and thoughtful and funny, and I will miss him dearly when he leaves.

I have had the great privilege of knowing Tim Grandy for 35 years, going back to the fall of '84 when he was my freshmen homeroom 108 teacher. As a student, Mr. Grandy's influence on my academic career and writing were profound. His encouragement, energy and dedication to teaching was obvious, and he always made learning fun. Room 108 (I know it's room 214 now, but for me and a slew of other alumnae, it will always be room 108) was a room I looked forward to entering every day. Yet Tim's dedication to his students went above and beyond the classroom and graduation. When I was a student at Xavier, I would call Tim, collect no less, and go over essays with him. Tim always accepted the charges and always made my writing better.  When I returned to DSHA in the fall of '99 as an English teacher, I could not have been more excited to teach in the same department as the very person who was responsible for my love of literature and teaching. And just as he did when I was a student, Tim Grandy has made coming to work fun. Each day I look forward to stopping in his room for a quick hello, or an answer to a question on some assignment or a commentary on the day's news. He is still the final authority when I have a question on writing, grammar, editing or any and all things literary. Most importantly, he is still one of the most kind, most caring, most genuine people I have ever had the good fortune to know and even greater fortune to call a friend.

Mr Grandy made me a writer. Simply the very best educator I have ever encountered. I walked into your classroom expecting another year of typical English classes and walked out with a passion for literature and the written word. Mr Grandy, I am so lucky to have been your student. From inspiring us to make the model essay wall, to the proud moment you placed that first Providence College pennant on your wall - the time spent in your class was above all else. You are not only a teacher, but someone I knew always had my back. Thank you for your time and for all those little moments outside of the classroom. You were always my favorite part of the dash-a-thon, assemblies and of course, our time in between school and soccer practice would have been nothing without you! I wish you the very best in your next adventure and hope you finally get on to Facebook so we can all stay connected. For the future dashers who will never get the chance to be in your class, not to worry - I’m sure you have forever shaped the DSHA English department. Your spirit will live on to inspire greatness for generations. Thank you!!!!
