She's the First Commemorative Prayer

BY PRESIDENT KATIE KONIECZNY, DEAN OF STUDENT AFFAIRS RUBY BROCK, AND DIRECTOR OF CAMPUS MINISTRY STPEHANIE MONSON
A prayer for the morning of Wednesday, January 20, 2021, for the swearing in of the first female Vice-President in our 244-year history as a country.
Good morning DSHA, this is Mrs. Konieczny joined by Mrs. Brock and Mrs. Monson.  Please quiet yourselves for morning prayer.

Today we commemorate this historic moment in our nation. Today, the United States will be swearing in the first female Vice-President in our 244-year history. There have only been two other women to receive major-party vice-president nominations — Geraldine Ferraro (D) in 1984 and Sarah Palin (R) in 2008. One female has received a major party presidential nomination — Hilary Clinton (D) in 2016.

It took the United States more than 200 years to have a female Supreme Court justice. Suffice it to say, women are under-represented in each of our country’s three branches of government today and historically. Yet, we celebrate this milestone!

Once again, let’s be reminded of this interesting fact as it relates to who we are as an institution:  According to the National Coalition of Girls’ Schools, only one percent of girls in the U.S. attend an all-girls school. However, 16% of female US Senators and 23% of females in the House of Representatives graduated from an all-girls institution.

In our nation, despite still being under-represented proportionally in our country’s history, today we have the largest number of women holding congressional seats. And for the first time in the history of our nation, a woman and woman of color will be sworn in today as Vice-President of the United States.

In this historic moment for all women, let us pray the prayer of Mary, mother of our Savior, who was chosen to do God’s will. May Mary’s words resound in our hearts and be the anthem that propels us forward on this historic day.

Let us pray,

My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,
my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,
for He has looked with favor on His lowly servant.
From this day all generations will call me blessed:
the Almighty has done great things for me,
and holy is His Name.
He has mercy on those who fear Him
in every generation.
He has shown the strength of His arm,
He has scattered the proud in their conceit.
He has cast down the mighty from their thrones,
and has lifted up the lowly.
He has filled the hungry with good things,
and the rich He has sent away empty.
He has come to the help of His servant Israel
for He has remembered His promise of mercy,
the promise He made to our fathers,
to Abraham and His children forever.
Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever.

Mary, Mother of our Savior, pray for us.
God of Wisdom, help me listen to understand.
In the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

Amen.

Go out and change the world, Dashers!
