Students Reflect on French Trip

This past spring, World Language Faculty Madame Gleeson led 14 DSHA juniors and seniors studying French on a two-week trip to France. They spent a week in Limoges with a host family — eating meals, attending school, and engaging in hobbies with them. The remainder of the trip included time spent in Paris, visitng historic sites and experiencing Parisian culture. Each student kept a journal while on the trip. Three students share their thoughts on the trip below.

Going on the French trip may have been one of the best decisions I have ever made. I cannot even explain how grateful I am for being given this opportunity. There was such a balance in this trip that introduced a whole other side of me to the world. I was able to develop relationships with people that I would never have. I was put in situations that I never thought I would be able to handle. I was finally able to communicate with others in French. I found a family — not only one in Limoges with my host family, but a family with the other DSHA girls on the trip. I found another world that gifted me with a passion — a passion for seeking relationships outside of the people in my comfort zone.

This French trip was the best experience of my life. I have never traveled to a country and immersed myself so much in the culture as I did during this trip. I loved learning, whether it was about how the French students did math problems in class, or when they’d eat, or about caves containing pre-historic art displays that were unintentionally found. I have learned so much French and I feel like I understand it much better. This trip was an unforgettable experience. I couldn’t wait to go back home to tell my family and friends all about France and how amazing the people and experiences were. I also made life-long relationships with my host family who I will miss very, very much. This amazing experience and cultural immersion is something I’ll remember all of my life.

The French exchange trip was the most amazing travel experience I’ve ever done and was overall a very impactful trip. In the beginning, I was a little nervous to go since I’ve never been out of the country before or traveled without my family before. However, I am so happy I went on this trip. I was able to make authentic connections and relationships with people who live across the world from me. The trip also taught me so much about a different culture and how important it is to appreciate and learn about other cultures. Overall, I learned so many wonderful things on this trip about France and the French culture. Another very important aspect I learned was that I need to further educate myself in cultures and travel more to learn more!
