organizations & clubs Reflecting our mission to provide a well-rounded environment for our young women, clubs and other co-curricular activities are offered. These activities afford our students the opportunity to express and develop their talents and abilities while providing yet another vehicle for the enhancement of leadership and social skills. The clubs listed below meet twice a month from 7:50 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. This period is provided during the school day so as not to interfere with students' after school responsibilities. Club Activities
Amnesty International
Students become actively involved in addressing human rights violations worldwide and developing an awareness of these issues at DSHA. The goal is to provide a voice for the people around the world who do not have a voice. Moderator: Mr. Chris Benes
Benvenuti! Fieri
The purpose of Benvenuti! Fieri, DSHA’s Italian Club, is to encourage its members to actively participate in celebrating the Italian culture. Club activities may include service work throughout Italian communities, spaghettis, learning to speak the Italian language, and much more. Some activities may be pursued in conjunction with the MUHS Italian Club. Moderator: Mrs. Judie Gillespie
Book Club
The purpose of this club is to encourage and foster a love of reading among DSHA students. This is your chance to make friends as you share analytical discussions about modern and classical works of literature. Moderator: Ms. Megan Ripple
Cycling Club
This non-competitive club meets several days a week during the spring of the year for after school cycling along the Menomonee River Parkway and Oak Leaf Trail. Meet new people in other grades, come for the fun, come for a great cardiovascular workout. Listen for announcements and watch for signs posted in the spring announcing our schedule. FBLA
Are you considering a career in business? Future Business Leaders of America is a national organization of high school students with an interest in business. The goal of FBLA is to help prepare students for the world of business through leadership development programs. The opportunity to compete in events at regional, state and national levels help build students' business knowledge and skills while having fun, traveling & meeting new people! French Club
Students will have the opportunity to participate in a variety of French cultural activities involving art, cuisine, fashion, films, holiday traditions, etc. It is not necessary to be a French student to join. Our goal is to promote understanding and appreciation of the language, culture, and people of France and other francophone countries. Moderator: Ms. Deborah Walther
Friends of Islam
The purpose of this club is to encourage recognition for and understanding of the religion of Islam. Goals include celebration of a wide range of Muslim cultures and to have fun while learning about the various traditions. This club will allow Muslims and non-Muslims to form an enjoyable acquaintance and try to understand the religious backgrounds of one another. A prime purpose of this club is also to dispel common stereotypes and serve as an “open window” for any student who would like to learn about a certain aspect of Islam. Furia Latina Club
“Querer es poder” Furia Latina is dedicated to our appreciation of the Hispanic culture while discussing topics of interest to Latinas, by getting together with clubs from other high schools to celebrate and promote Latino culture. Furia Latina attempts to support and help its members be successful academically and socially here at Divine Savior Holy Angels High School, by meeting as a group and supporting each other. This group exists to support its members, to educate DSHA students in general, organize Spanish speaking parents and get them more involved in school activities. German Club
German Club is open to any student who wishes to share in activities and events that foster an awareness of German history, heritage, and culture. Activities of the Club are designed to foster cultural diversity: members will not only become aware of ethnic differences but also develop an understanding and even an appreciation of them. Activities include a possible trip to Chicago for Weihnachtsmark, German lunch and Holiday Folk Fair. Moderator: Mrs. Coleen Ayudan
Go Green!
Are you concerned about the state of our environment? Do you find yourself curious about all the hype surrounding the recent “Green” Movement? The purpose of the Go Green! Club is to raise awareness about various environmental issues in the world. Club time will be spent discussing and sharing ways to live a more “green” life. We’ll also help with projects that help DSHA become a more environmentally-friendly atmosphere. Come to share, listen and get involved. Moderator: Mrs. Lisa Metz
Harry Potter Book Club
Harry Potter Book Club is an opportunity for students to discuss and analyze major themes and character growth in the novels in-depth. Moderator: Mr. Quinn Loucks
Honors Studio
Honors Studio is an open studio for visual art students who desire additional studio time or assistance from art teachers regarding college planning, portfolio development and preparation for contests, display and scholarship opportunities. Moderator: Mrs. Margaret Von Rueden
Improv Club
Improv games will be played at DSHA for the enjoyment of all participants and observers. The club fosters self confidence, public speaking skills, and camaraderie among teammates. Moderator: Sister Linda Surette
Knitting Club
Come and knit! All levels welcome, beginners to experienced knitters. Bring yourself and learn; bring knitting needles if you have them and yarn to try. Or bring a kit and we will help you figure it out. For experienced knitters, come and knit your projects and inspire us all! We also have a knitting machine you can try. We will be making scarves for the homeless for the Christmas season. This is a very low key, relaxing club activity. All are welcome. Meet in the Art Studio. Moderator: Mrs. Jill Pitterle
Latin Club
Latin Club is run by a board of elected student officers. Activities include preparing for the annual Wisconsin Junior Classical League Latin Convention, planning and enjoying a Roman banquet each spring during National Foreign Language Week, and planning services projects and activities. Elections for the following school year are held each spring. Moderator: Mrs. Jennifer Ganley
Literary Magazine
Students may contribute poetry, creative writing, art, or photography to an annual magazine. Student editors organize, design, and edit this outlet for students’ creative energies. Magazine is published in spring. Moderator: Mr. Terry McGinn
Liturgy Preparation Club
Liturgical Prep club seeks to engage young people in the “source and summit” of the Christian life, the mass, by encouraging their participation in its planning. This club meets to plan parts of the liturgy and prayer experience for the whole school community. It provides opportunities to engage in scripture, brainstorm themes and activities for the liturgical seasons, write prayers of petition, and PRAY together. All faiths are welcomed. Math and Engineering Club
The Math and Engineering Club is a group of girls that are interested in the mathematical sciences as applied to engineering applications. Club members strive to develop solutions to interesting projects with the intent of being competitive within the group, but also to compete in outside competitions such as the Rube Goldberg competition. The Math and Engineering Club makes problem solving fun! Moderator: Mr. Chris Alvin
Campus Ministry Council
The Campus Ministry Council strives to realize the mission of Jesus Christ within our school community by providing the student body with various opportunities to bring their faith to life. These opportunities include education on social justice issues, all-school collections and service projects, individual volunteer experiences, and opportunities for prayer and reflection. Student leaders and those who are involved in this club realize the great impact that a small group of committed people can have on the world around them. Moderators: Mrs. Cathy Trochelman
Science Club
The purpose of the DSHA Science Club is to promote an awareness and appreciation for science in our daily world. We explore some enjoyable things in life and look at them through a scientific perspective. Science Club works to develop intellectual curiosity and diverse friendships. Moderator: Mrs. Gina Collins
Sisters of Culture
The purpose of Sisters of Culture is to celebrate the ethnic backgrounds and cultures of the DSHA community, and to reach out in service to younger students in the larger Milwaukee community. Moderator: Mrs. Triniti Malone
Spanish Club
The purpose of the club is to give students interested in all things Spanish an opportunity to gather and learn more about Hispanic cultures through various activities within and outside of school. Possible activities include Spanish games and songs, working with Spanish recipes, a field trip to a Mexican Mercado, and, in celebration of the World Language Week, having a Spanish bake sale. Yearbook
The Yearbook staff is responsible for producing DSHA's annual Retrospect. Under the direction and guidance of a faculty advisor, staff members determine the format for each edition of the yearbook. They also select the photos, design the layouts, and write the copy. In a collaborative effort, the advisor and staff attempt to create a highly positive portrait of the DSHA community. This is a club and is open to sophomores, juniors, and seniors, and usually meets after school, rather than during club times. Moderator: Mr. Tim Grandy
Other Activities
Athletics
DSHA offers a wide variety of athletic opportunities for students. The school sponsors varsity, junior varsity, and freshman teams in volleyball, basketball, soccer, and softball. Junior varsity and varsity teams are sponsored in golf and tennis. Tryouts are held for these teams with a limited number of students allowed to participate. Open enrollment is allowed for the junior varsity and varsity teams of cross country, swimming and diving, downhill skiing and track and field. Ice hockey is offered in the winter as a WIAA co-op team and is housed out of University School Milwaukee.
Club Sports
DSHA offers participation at the club level in rugby and field hockey. Field hockey is played in the fall and rugby in both fall and spring. You may participate in only one club or athletic team per season. Athletic Director: Mrs. Peggy Seegers-Braun
Theater Arts
Every year DSHA produces four major theatrical events: a fall musical and winter comedy or drama perfomed on the main stage of the Hansen Theatre, a spring drama in the intimate arena theatre, and the culmination of DSHA’s summer fine arts program with another main stage musical production collaborating past, present, and future DSHA student and community members. Opportunities abound whether involved in the casts, crews, production staffs, or musicians in the orchestra. ¡Juntos!
Juntos is a service program that takes place at the Working Boys' Center in Quito, Ecuador. This opportunity is available to eight students for two weeks during Easter Break of their junior year. Juniors who are native speakers of Spanish or who are in at least their third year of Spanish are able to apply for acceptance into the program. Acceptance is determined after review of the application, brief essay and input from faculty regarding the student's character. Moderator. Sra. Terri Holt
Model United Nations Conference
Students attend the Harvard Model Unitied Nations conference (in Boston) each December. This is a four-day simulation of what takes place at the real United Nations in New York. Students assume the role of delegates representing assigned countries. The students prepare background research of the country they represent as well as for their Committee Topic. The four-day conference is intense with delegates working on their negotiating skills in preparation for getting Resolutions passed. Moderator: Mrs. Chriss Laemmar
Music
DSHA has five musical ensembles for that perform at the annual Fall, Christmas and Spring Concerts. Choral groups include Concert Choir, Camerata Singers, and the Angelaires (auditioned). Instrumental groups include full Orchestra (winds, strings, and percussion) and Handbell Choir. Other opportunities include the fall musical, liturgical music, and the WSMA Solo and Ensemble Music Festivals each spring. Choral Director and Department Chair: Mrs. Rebekah Wickert
Angelaires
This specialized auditioned choir performs show tunes and vocal jazz, as well as other styles, with advanced work in proper vocal technique and choreography. Each Angelaire is chosen through competitive annual vocal auditions. With a very demanding performance schedule, participation is required at extra activities during the school day, evenings, and on weekends. Prerequisites include one semester of Concert Choir and an audition. Each year that a student is an Angelaire they must enroll in at least one semester of Camerata Choir. . National Honor Society
Students will be inducted to this honor society after 6 semesters if they excel in scholarship, leadership, character, and service to the school and community. Moderator: Dr. Heather Mansfield
Student Congress
The Student Congress is comprised of a government of 6 Commissions, designed to meet the needs of the DSHA student's whole person. The Special Events, School Pride, Student Ambassador, Student Welfare, Communication, and Policies and Practices Commissions, comprised of both peer-elected and TSC-selected members of all grade levels meet regularly to plan events and activities and institute policies that will enhance the DSHA community and provide a positive experience for DSHA students, concentrating on both the leaders' and the student body's growth in the Qualities of the Graduate. Student Recruitment
Sophomores, juniors, and seniors who are recommended and interested in participating in DSHA's recruitment program. These recommended students visit area grade schools as student recruiters, serve as guides at our annual Open House, and act as DSHA representatives to junior high students. Members attend a training workshop in August and an Open House training session in October. Moderator: Mrs. Triniti Malone
