Department Philosophy and Goals

The World Languages Department is composed of two components: the modern languages of French, German, Spanish, and the classical language of Latin. The French, German, and Spanish component of the Department has as its primary purpose to teach students to communicate in the target language and to move them toward fluency.  While speaking is a major emphasis, the skills of listening, reading, and writing are also developed. The Latin component of the language department has as its primary purpose to teach the students to read Latin and to appreciate the structure and beauty of the language and culture. The entire department fosters an appreciation of cultural variances and encourages students to learn about and enjoy those aspects of other cultures both in and out of the classroom.

General Course Goals

To provide students with the four skills of a language:  listening, speaking, reading, and writing (the intensity of which is determined by the level taught).

To provide students with an awareness of various cultures and encourage their active participation through a variety of activities, both in and outside of the classroom:

  • Exchange programs with Lycee St. Jean, Limoges, France
  • Trips to the countries being studied
  • Service project at the Working Boys Center in Quito, Ecuador
  • Ethnic restaurants and banquets
  • Films and foreign speakers
  • Various ethnic events: dances, concerts, festivals, and plays
  • Language newspapers
  • Contests and national exams
