DSHA beats No. 1 seeded Homestead at State
Brookfield duo becomes first team since 1998 to repeat as champs
Milwaukee, WI – Second-seeded Amanda Gryniewicz and Haley Bortz of Divine Savior Holy Angels (DSHA) High School became the first doubles team since 1998 to repeat as Division 1 state champions, when they overtook top-seeded Caitlin Kammerait and Allie Burns of Homestead High School, 7-6, 7-6 in Madison on Saturday.
The Dasher pair; Gryniewicz, a junior, and Bortz, a senior, both from Brookfield, finished the season with a 26-4 record.The Highlander team, who finished the season with a 24-2 record, undefeated in the previous 20 matches, defeated the Dashers 6-7, 6-1, 6-3 in September.
“I am extremely proud of Haley and Amanda for all they have accomplished in the last two years. Both demonstrated true courage to battle back from being down 1-5 in both sets to capture their second straight doubles championship,” said DSHA Athletic Director Peggy Seegers-Braun. “It took great focus, determination and belief in each other to make this happen.It will forever be the standard of ‘never give up until the last point is won – anything can happen.’ The whole school community shares in their accomplishment with pride!”
