Department Philosophy

As a Catholic, caring school community of DSHA parents, students, teachers and administrators, we are responsible for the total development of the individuals who make up this community. We believe that growth and development can best take place where people love and respect themselves and each other. Through our comprehensive guidance program, our goal is that all students will develop into confident and capable young women who are able to accept and appreciate the successes and failures of daily life.

Our Guidance Department personnel are individuals who care about our young women and their families and try to build strong relationships with them.

Goals

To provide a means of support and encouragement in sorting out values, coping with problems and exploring life's choices.

To foster a sense of belonging and connectedness among students and faculty.

To provide an opportunity to discuss issues and concerns with peers and an adult advisor.

To aid students in setting academic goals.

To assist in matching career possibilities and academic potential.

To provide consultation and support services to students, faculty and parents in relation to academic achievement.

To administer aptitude and achievement tests and interest inventories; and to share the results with students, parents and faculty.

Individual Counseling

Students are free to elicit the help of the Guidance Counselors at any time for any of the six aspects of students needs:

    Career-Vocational Development        Interpersonal Relationships
    Personal-Affective Development       Academic Development
    Family Issues                                College Planning
